Generational Consumer Preferences: Purchase Evaluation and Age

Hello, and welcome to this new article on the Playmarketing blog! A company aiming to boost its product sales must always keep the characteristics of its buyer personas clearly in mind. Among these, one factor that may sometimes be underestimated, yet plays a significant role in product selection, is age: how do generational consumer preferences impact purchase evaluation across different age groups? Let’s find out in the following paragraphs, where we’ll analyze what each generation tends to prioritize in this regard.

Baby Boomers: The Search for Brand Reliability

The Baby Boomer generation (commonly called “Boomers”) includes people born between the post-war period (1946) and 1964.

Having grown up in a time of great (and rapid) growth (between the mid-1950s and mid-1970s), Boomers are, in most cases, individuals who have learned to recognize mass consumption and thus tend to be very brand loyal. They lived through an era when many new brands emerged, and they often remain attached to them. Brand reliability is typically what Boomers seek most.

Generation X: Creative Brand, Attractive Brand

Now let’s examine the next group. Generation X (comprising people born between 1965 and 1980) grew up in an era that saw the introduction of new forms of entertainment.

This is a middle age group: more flexible in some respects than the previous one (differences in ethnicity and gender started to become more common), yet still somewhat distant from today’s concept of full open-mindedness.

However, it is undeniably a generation of great creativity, with the first wave of technological development providing people with increasing entertainment choices. The “stability” sought in brands by the previous generation gives way to individuals now looking for something a bit more innovative, or at least creative.

Millennials: Embracing Change

Here, more than in other categories, it’s essential to clarify the term’s reference: the word “Millennials” is often mistakenly used to describe those born in the new millennium.

However, Millennials actually refers to people born from 1981 until the end of the 20th century. These are the individuals who lived through their teenage years or part of them during the 2000s, a period of even faster evolution compared to Generation X, making them accustomed to change and technological progress.

They are the first true generation to grow up with the internet as a constant companion, a factor that accelerates every kind of process, including the spread of news, games, initiatives, products, and…brands.

With the internet’s expansion, it became easier for companies to gain visibility and for start-ups to enter the market. Beyond rapid brand dissemination, it’s notable that Millennials have always been accustomed to interacting with brands online. So, for a brand to “win over” this generation, it must feel close and actively engage with the “Millennial Buyer Persona,” fostering a relationship as immersive as possible.

Generation Z: An Increasingly Ethics-Oriented Decision

Finally, we come to the youngest group: Generation Z. This refers to those born from the late 1990s to around 2010, who are currently young adults (or who have only recently left that stage).

These individuals, following the Millennials, are digital natives who grew up in an era that moves even faster than that experienced by Millennials, with the proliferation of social media and a constant influx of digital stimuli.

However, the main difference from the previous group is the rising awareness among young people on issues such as integration, environment, conflict, and more, prompting today’s youth to focus primarily on the ethical integrity of brands. Generational consumer preferences here highlight the importance of brands resonating with moral nobility in the eyes of this audience (which often includes philanthropy as well), making it more likely to attract this “new generation” of customers.
